NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 28: Economics (Class 12th)

SANJIV SINGHAL, a DU topper in economics and at present a practising Chartered Accountant, feels that a student can easily finish the entire economics syllabus in a week’s time. He says a student should concentrate on the NCERT syllabus book.

“Different books give you different explanations and there could be a notable difference of opinion in both. In such a case, the examiner will mark you only on the basis of what your NCERT book has to say,” he explains. He does, however, recommend an extra book for the practical portions (which is about 20 per cent of the syllabus).

He advises students to make diagrams wherever required and label them properly. “Don’t forget to mention even little details such as the axis and make sure you identify the curves,” he says.

He tells students to pay attention to the National Income Accounting in Section A, as it covers 35 marks of the entire syllabus and most five-marks questions come from this. But, he asks the students to attempt the one-mark and two-marks questions first as they don’t take much time to complete and assure 100 per cent marks. Singhal stresses on neatness. “Give spacing between the questions to ensure that the examiner does not overlook anything. And underline all important points, that way even silly mistakes get overlooked,” he says. Devyani, who teaches Economics at Tagore International School, advises students not to waste time on introductions in case of the one-mark and the two-marks questions. “Even for the detail questions, give a brief but clear introduction and proceed with the other elements,” she suggests.

Definitions, are yet another thing that she feels the students should be thorough with, adding that these be supplemented with examples and diagrams. And for those who are worried that they will forget, Devyani has a solution. “Have confidence in yourself, don’t brood. And when lost, just close your eyes and recall that portion. It will come to you.”
