WASHINGTON, AUGUST 21: Reigning US Open champion Andre Agassi has low expectations of defending his Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows after losing to Alex Corretja in the finals of the 800,000 ATP Washington Classic.

The second-seeded Spaniard made nine aces and took advantage of 38 unforced errors by the two-time defending champion for a 6-2 6-3 triumph, taking only 72 minutes to dump the 30-year-old American and end his best-ever Open tune-up. Corretja snapped a 14-match Agassi win streak here, denying top seed his fourth Washington crown in five years.

Agassi missed a month with back spasms after a July auto accident, won only one match in two Masters Series events and failed again here in his first final since winning the Australian Open title in January. His US Open hopes are dim.

Kuerten downs Safin
Indianapolis: Gustavo Kuerten earned his first ATP hard-court title, outlasting rattled Russian Marat Safin for a 3-6 7-6 7-2 7-6 7-2 victory at the 800,000 RCA Championships here on Sunday.

After 40 hard-court failures, the top seeded Brazilian came good on number 41 as he worked for two hours, 19 minutes to stage a comeback over the third-seeded 20-year-old.

Hingis supreme
Montreal: Serena Williams retired in the third set of her championship match against World number one Martina Hingis here on Sunday with a left foot injury, casting doubts on her ability to defend her US Open title. Swiss teen Hingis won the 1.08 million Canadian Open title. She was leading 0-6, 6-3, 3-0 when the fourth-seeded American dropped out, ending her family8217;s WTA win streak at four titles.

8220;I don8217;t know what it is,8221; Williams said. 8220;I never had a foot problem in my life. It was hurting last night, this morning.
