PUNE, Dec 2: A hardware shop owner residing at Happy Colony was arrested on Monday by the Kothrud police on charges of extortion and threatening to kill a collegian.

The hardware shop owner, Shailesh Jaiswal (23), was arrested immediately after he took the ransom of Rs 50,000 from Dhaval Lalit Thakkar at a restaurant near the Police Commissionerate last afternoon.

On November 9, Jaiswal telephoned Dhaval, pretending to be a member of a Mumbai-based gang. Jaiswal had demanded the ransom after threatening to murder Dhaval and his family, police said. Dhaval asked for a fortnight to collect the money. However he could not raise the amount within the deadline. He informed his parents when Jaiswal started calling him up frequently and lodged a FIR at the Kothrud police station. Acting on the complaint, the Kothrud police set a trap at a restaurant near the Commissionerate where Dhaval was to hand over the money to Jaiswal.
