
The Anti-Corruption Branch has arrested a sub-inspector and a journalist on charges of extorting money from a scrap dealer in Prehladpur area of Sangam Vihar. The S-I is the chowki-in-charge of Pul Prehladpur.
Sources said one Subhash Yadav had lodged a complaint with the department alleging that SI Praveen Vats and constable Anil Kumar were demanding Rs 4,000 as a monthly bribe from him. The duo also asked him to pay Rs 75,000 for not making any payments in the past, Yadav added.
The complainant said his business was based on legally correct documents but the officers were threatening him with dire consequences if payments were not made. 8220;In a sting operation, it was revealed that Rs 60,000 and Rs 2,000 were paid to the S-I and the constable respectively and an additional Rs 20,000 was paid to the chowki staff,8221; a senior Anti-Corruption official said. The sting also brought to light the role of a journalist, who was instrumental in the transfer of the money. On Wednesday, the journalist was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 15,000 from Yadav, police said.
After the transaction, the Anti-Corruption officials arrested both the SI and the journalist, identified as Jatinder Chaturvedi, an employee with a popular Hindi daily.
The constable is on the run and efforts are on nab him, police said.
