Giving in to rebels’ demand and rushing in to take advantage of the Telangana issue in the next Assembly elections, the Congress is planning to set up a special election committee for managing the polls in the region.

Telangana, with 107 seats out of the total 294 seats in the Assembly, is a crucial region. Though in the last elections the Congress won 41 seats out of the total 107, it was still the party’s best performance as compared to the other regions of the state.

Senior leaders of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, including those who support separate Telangana, today met general secretary incharge Ghulam Nabi Azad to discuss the issue. AICC sources say the party is considering a special package for Telangana ahead of elections which are expected early. The first part of the package is an organisational revamp to ‘‘satisfy the aspirations of Congressmen supporting separate Telangana’’.

The separate poll committee would look into the region for the Assembly elections, including choosing candidates and election campaign.

The loosely-formed Congress Forum for Telangana (CFT) has been demanding that the party manifesto must promise to give statehood to Telangana if the party comes to power. Another demand has been for bringing a resolution to the same effect in the APCC ahead of the elections. The party is also considering the demand for a separate regional Congress unit in Telangana. The party has been holding back the reconstitution of the APCC since the appointment of D. Srinivas as the president this August.
