The condition of polo player Shivraj Singh (29) of Jodhpur, who suffered serious head injuries after falling off a horse, is now stable.
Neurosurgeon Dr S.N. Bhagwati of Bombay Hospital — he performed a two-and-a-half-hour operation that required the flap of the skull to be removed — said the prince, presently under intensive care, would have to be monitored for 48 hours.
‘‘He’s stable and on a ventilator, but he’s still unconscious. We’ll be observing him for 48 hours,’’ said CMO Dr Ashish Tiwari.
Shivraj, an avid polo player for the last eight years, slipped into coma when his horse fell on him after colliding with another player at the Birla Cup match in Jaipur.
He was initially admitted to SMS Medical College, Jaipur’s largest government-run medical institute where MRI investigations revealed serious injuries on the left side of his brain and swelling of the nerves in the brain stem. On the recommendation of Mumbai-based neurosurgeon, Dr Bhagwati, the prince, an Oxford graduate, was flown in on a private jet by his father Maharaja Gaj Singh II to the city early Monday morning.
‘‘The royal family realised that SMS Hospital did not even have basic facilities for handling serious cases,’’ a source close to the family said.
Incidentally, industrialist and close family friend
Gautam Singhania was among the first to be by the prince’s side at the Jaipur hospital on Friday.
