VADODARA, Dec 30: Classes were held amid heavy police presence at the M S University on Wednesday. The police protection is to remain on the campus till January 5, the date of re-polling.
Student union leaders from the Padra College of Commerce called off their hunger strike after two days following an assurance from Vice-Chancellor Anil Kane of free and fair polls. Incidentally, these union leaders had contested the posts of faculty general secretary and faculty representatives; they were demanding that the votes be counted, instead of fresh elections. They pointed out that most of the election process for their posts had been completed before the trouble broke out.
However, following the V-C8217;s assurance, they agreed to go by the decision to hold re-polls.
Meanwhile, the deans of various faculties of the university met on Wednesday to discuss their security requirements on the day of the election. They decided that senior professors of various departments in every faculty would stand along with the security staff at the entrances to the university, aiming to restrict the number of illegal entrant into the campus.
The senior professors would check the identity cards of the students and only registered students would be allowed to enter.
