City gets new mammography machine

CHANDIGARH, MARCH 9: UT Home Secretary Anuradha Gupta inaugurated an advanced mammography X-ray unit at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, ere today.

Speaking on the occasion, Government Medical College Radiology Department head Dr B. D. Gupta said: 8220;In Chandigarh, one out of eight women will suffer from cancer in their lifetime. The machine can detect even a small cancer with precision and it can be treated with almost 95 per cent success.8221;

Government Medical College and Hospital Director and Principal Dr. V. K. Kak said that the college was also planning to initiate mass screening programmes from April. A comprehensive screening programme can significantly reduce breast cancer mortality in women over the age of 40 years, he said.
