CHANDIGARH, Oct 5: Chandigarh Police and Khalsa Sporting Club scored victories over their respective opponents to set up title clash in the ongoing Chandigarh State Senior football league at the Government Model School in Sector 23, today. City cops beat Panjab University Campus by two goals to one while Khalsa XI outplayed Government College, Sector 46, 2-1.
In the Chandigarh Police-PUC tie, the former had the upper hand but shot into the lead in the later part of the first session when unmarked Rajeev inside the penalty area directed the ball into the goal off a flag kick. The eventual winner led 1-0 at the break.
A lapse in the PUC defence and wrong anticipation by keeper Balwinder Singh gave city cops 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second session. Manish, who collected the ball off a pass from Kuljeet at the top of the `D’, to beat advancing goalkeeper.
Down by 2-0, PUC made attempts to reduce the margin and were successful in their move. Avneet’s powerful shot went past goalkeeper Mukesh outstretched hands into the right corner of the net.
In the second semifinal, Govt College-46 lads failed to maintain the initial lead and were shown the exit door by Khalsa XI who fought back strongly in the second half to remain in contention for the title.
Gurwinder shot for GC-46 in the 23rd minute while Harpreet levelled the score in the 65th minute. The match-winner was scored by Parveen in the 81st minute. The final will be played tomorrow at 4 p.m.
YPS beat St Kabir
Host Yadavinder Public School, SAS Nagar, scored a solitary goal win over St Kabir School-26 in the first ICSE football tournament at the YPS ground, today. The match winner was scored by Girish Sharma.
St Kabir School also lost St Xavier School-44 by one goal to nil, in the their second encounter.
Five schools are participating in the meet.
Swimming meet
The 13TH Chandigarh State swimming meet in senior, junior and sub-junior categories will be organised by the Chandigarh Swimming Association at the Panjab University pool from October 9. In a two-day event, competition will be held in both men’s and women’s group.
