Exactly a week after former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh was put to extensive questioning by the state Vigilance Bureau in connection with the Ludhiana City Centre scam, the Supreme Court today issued notice to his son, Raninder Singh, acting on the Punjab Government8217;s petition challenging his bail.

Raninder was granted anticipatory bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the City Centre scam. The former CM and few of his family members are under scanner after allegations of colluding with a developer for an allotment of Rs 3,000 crore project.

Today, taking up the petition filed by the Government of Punjab seeking quashing of his anticipatory bail, a vacation bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and D K Jain sought replies from respondents including Raninder. Arguing for cancellation of his bail, the counsel for Punjab contended that the custodial interrogation of the accused persons was a must to arrive at the truth in the scam, which has caused massive financial losses to the state exchequer.

The counsel also told the apex court that since the accused are very influential and powerful political leaders of the state and include former Chief Minister, his wife and sons, there was strong possibility of the investigations being tampered with in the case.

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau is investigating the case, while the former Chief Minister has been demanding a probe by an independent agency like the CBI or the Enforcement Directorate. After being grilled for over seven hours, the former Chief Minister was given 10 days by the Vigilance Bureau to submit various documents.
