CHANDIGARH, OCT 4: Workers observed a State Centre of Trade Unions-sponsored Virodh Divas Protest Day on Monday to protest the quot;anti-working class and oppressive stancequot; of the Government of Punjab. The workers were protesting the police lathi-charge in Hoshiarpur on August 30.

Hundreds of workers, shouting anti-government slogans, marched from Industrial Area Phase I to the intersection of Dakshin Marg and Purva Marg, where they later burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

The workers, led by Chandigarh CITU vice-president Satyavir Singh and Chandigarh DYFI chief Madan Singh, demanded that suspended workers of Sonalika Tractor Limited to be reinstated and they be paid their wages for the duration.

The protesting workers also demanded the transfer of top police officials in Hoshiarpur and a probe into the August 30 incident.
