PUNE, Aug 22: The Maharashtra Government today ordered a probe by the State Crime Investigation Department (CID) into the death of Prakash Waghmare within hours after he was released following questioning by Pimpri police on Saturday morning.

Even as the medicos from Sassoon hospital who performed a post-mortem on Waghmare last evening are yet to file their report, his viscera has been preserved for analysis.

The death of the 30-year-old resident of Vitthalnagar area in Pimpri, who was suspected to be involved in 10 cases of property related crimes such as thefts and burglaries, has gone as a case of “accidental death” in the records of the Pimpri police.

Inspector in-charge of Pimpri police Shahajirao Patil, who was camping at the Sant Tukaram Nagar police chowkey ever since it was gheraoed by a mob of angry residents late last evening, refused to divulge details of the progress in investigations.

“The investigations into the case have been handed over to the State CID,” was all Patil would say. Officials from the State CID (Crime) were not available for comment.

Police claim that Waghmare, whose involvement was suspected in several crimes, was providing information about the activities of other criminals to the police for the last some days.He had complained of chest pain while two policemen from Pimpri police station had taken him to the Ota scheme in Nigdi to catch a suspected thief, according to the police.

The police officials claimed that the policemen accompanying him took Waghmare to a doctor in Chinchwad who discharged him after administering saline.

Waghmare was shifted to the hospital by his family after he reached home. He died in the evening, the police officials said.Tension had mounted in Pimpri as a mob of irate residents gheraoed the Sant Tukaram Nagar police chowkey demanding a through inquiry.The situation came under control only after deputy commissioner of police (Zone III) Sanjay Verma promised to probe the incident.
