A CID inquiry against former Chief Minister F A Khonglam has begun with the department processing papers related to corruption charges that have been forwarded by the district police.
Khonglam — who lost the last March 3 Assembly election — is facing the ire of Sohra People’s Movement, which had filed an FIR against him and the Sohra Block Development Officer (BDO) after it reportedly unearthed embezzlement of funds meant for Special Rural Works Programme (SRWP).
In fact, the FIR was jointly filed by sixteen villages under the Sohra constituency after one Sawain had found out through the RTI Act that the SRWP fund, running into crores, had been misutilised.
The previous Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government had instituted a magisterial inquiry after allegations were raised against Khonglam and two other officers. The magisterial inquiry, headed by A Nikhla, found Khonglam and two former BDOs guilty of financial irregularities.
In fact, the allegations of financial irregularity were partly responsibile for Khonglam’s electoral
debacle. Two other former legislators against whom corruption charges were made were former Minister P T Sawkmie and Martle N Mukhim. Like Khonglam, both of them lost the March 3 Assembly elections.
