Nine years after being ousted, chef and restaurateur Nelson Wang of China Garden is back at the Cricket Club of India CCI. Wang, who is credited for introducing Chinese to Indian masses, had had an unceremonious exit from the famed South Mumbai club in 1997.

The restaurateur, who was handling the catering for the Chinese cuisine at the club, is said to have been forced to withdraw his catering and refused his dues after a misunderstanding between the then management, headed by Raj Singh Dungarpur. 8220;There was a problem between the two parties but I have put it all behind me. As for the money due to me, I am sure I will be compensated. CCI is a respectable institution and I have faith in all they do,8221; says the chef who invented the Manchurian.

Wang returned to the club in August this year after the new management approached him. 8220;CCI is my temple 8211; this is the place that first gave me a career break. I feel fortunate to be back,8221; raves Wang.

Current CEO and secretary Kamaljeet Rajpal chooses to call it 8220;the return of the prodigal8221; and says that CCI is glad to have Wang back. 8220;CCI has over 8,000 members and it8217;s our duty to provide them with food at par in quality with what they enjoy outside. For a few years now there had been a demand to improvise on the same. Since we were in constant touch with Nelson, we proposed that he return and he accepted the offer after we ironed out the differences,8221; smiles Rajpal.

Wang and the CCI committee have also reinstated Wang8217;s affable manager Sam Chang from his retirement. 8220;He is as young as energetic as he was a decade ago and an asset to the club as he shares a wonderful equation with many members,8221;

adds the CEO. The members too are supportive of the decision and sales seem to have doubled.

Wang, who also introduced Mumbai to the mouth-watering flavours of Schezwan and Hunan, has another innovation up his sleeve. The restaurateur has introduced veg meat, or mock meat dishes, in China Garden8217;s outlets at Kemp8217;s Corner and Khar. With the vegetarian guests in mind, dishes like veg lamb, veg prawns and veg chicken are meant to give them a flavour of the meats through 100 per cent vegetarian ingredients.
