
As many as 50 illegal structures were demolished by the Chandigarh Housing Board in Sector 47 on Tuesday. Around 30 structures on government land were razed, about eight were newly constructed and ten others were removed.
The residents of Sector 47 pelted stones on the bulldozer of the Chandigarh Housing Board CHB, which was pressed into service to demolish the illegal structures constructed by them. But the police personnel deployed brought the situation under control.
The residents, while protesting against the anti-encroachment drive, deflated its tyres and snatched away the keys of the bulldozer. They protested for about 10 minutes.
DSP south J S Khaira said they had deployed enough police personnel to keep the situation under control. The woman police were also deployed to control women protesters.
8220;There were a few residents who pelted stones on the machine when it was bringing down an illegal structure. Nobody was injured. There was a minor incident of stone pelting. Only the windshield of the machine was broken,8221; he said.
Police have arrested one resident, Maninder Singh of 2779/2, after a section officer section officer lodged a complaint with the CHB for creating disturbances while government officials were on duty.

Talking to Newsline CHB secretary Kamlesh Kumar said: 8220;None of the buildings confining to the norms were demolished. Only those constructions and buildings, violating the norms, were pulled down.8221;
More such anti-encroachment drives are to be conducted next week in Sectors 38, 39, 41, 44, he added.
