AMRITSAR:
Punjab State Medical and Dental Teachers Association PSMDTA would go on a hunger strike on June 23 in protest against alleged indifference towards their demands. Stating this yesterday, Baljeet Singh Dhillon, general secretary of PSMDTA, said despite numerous meetings with the authorities, the redressal of their grievances was not carried out.
Their demands include time bound promotions, new pay scales and allowances as recommended by the department.
CRIME
AMRITSAR:
One Bhoor Singh was stabbed to death by five persons at Gandiwind village in Amritsar police district on Tuesday night. According to police sources, the victim was trapped in an armed clash which took place between Dilbagh Singh and his rivals comprising Harjit Singh, Amrik Singh, Babu and Hira Singh due to some dispute. A case in this connection has been registered, police added.
DHARAMSALA:
Kangra police have seized 3.96 lakh ml of unauthorised country liquor from a jeep during a nakabandi at Sakoh village, near here, on Tuesday and arrested two persons in this connection. District police chief K.C. Sadayal said the jeep had been impounded. A case has been registered under the Excise Act, he added.
DHARAMSHALA:
Kangra Police recovered three dead bodies from three different places in Kangra sub-division in the wee hours today. Police said the body of one Kamlesh Paul was recovered from a khad near Rajiana, 11 km from here.Another dead body of a 31-year old shopkeeper, Raj Kumar, was recovered from Smaloti Baroh, road 12 km from here. Police said body bore marks of injuries.The third case pertained to an unidentified tantrik of Gaggal, whose body was found in a totally decompsed condition down a hillock in Mastpur khad. The police said, the tantrik8217; must have died two to three days. Going by the condition of the body, his entire set-up for performing tantra Vidya8217; was spotted nearby.

PATIALA:
The Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes Employees Federation held a protest dharna in front of the office of the commissioner Patiala division here, yesterday. The dharna-cum-rally was addressed by among others, Achhra Singh Lapran state president of the federation and Lajja Singh Sidhu district president. The protesters presented a memorandum regarding the demands of the federation to the Commissioner Patiala division.

A near total bandh was observed by shopkeepers here yesterday as a group of municipal councillors went round the city demanding arrest of certain persons. According to sources, certain activists of the Punjab Karamchari Dal had opened their office in a garage of the municipal council. This was objected to by the council authorities and the office was forcibly removed. This was resisted by some activists of the Dal and case was registered against those..
PLANS
NAHAN:
Roop Dass Kashyap, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, HP, while addressing the public at Bharholi in Rajgarh Tehsil, said that every child in the state would be imparted education. He said that a selection committee, under the chairmanship of Nahan SDM, had been constituted to appoint teachers for the schools of the district on contract basis. He sanctioned Rs 1 lakh for the construction of additional two rooms for the Bharholi middle school.
SHIMLA:
Minister of State for Horticulture Narender Bragta, who represents Shimla town constituency, today announced construction of a flyover near Tara Hall School. He said work would start soon. This would ease pressure on traffic on Main Cart Road route. Bragtra was addressing a public meeting in Kaithu area today. He said to ensure cleanliness of the town a team of officers would be constituted to undertake on-the-spot inspection and monitor the system. Bragta said that community centres were also proposed for various places in Shimla.

To promote and develop Punjabi language, literature and culture, the Punjabi University will soon set up a new regional Centre at California in USA , according to sources.The university is already running a centre in England where M.A. Punjabi is taught.

MOGA:
The State Bank of India Chandigarh circle comprising of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh earned a profit of Rs 235.86 crore during 1997-98 against a profit of Rs 166.70 crore during 1996-97. This was revealed by Chief General Manager State Bank of India K.K. Narula while releasing four tractors for which SBI Agriculture Branch Moga advanced loans to farmers.
