I know it sounds unbelievable, but it’s true. After years of suffering, my chronic insomnia, low blood sugar and aches and pains have completely disappeared because my food allergies were treated,’’ says Mumbai-based housewife Kanchan Parekh. Her bouncing back to health got her sceptical jewellery-exporter husband looking for similar answers for his back and leg aches too—and once again the culprit was food allergies.
Testimonials pour in from people who have been helped by the US-based Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Techniques (NAET). Falling hair, hay fever, hives, poor memory, and dyslexia have all been treated. All of which could have been due to allergies ranging from milk products to cosmetics, chemicals and plastics.
The originator of this non-invasive treatment method is a US-based allopath Dr Devi Nambudripad. The Kerala-born doctor developed the system in 1983 based on kinesiology, chiropractry and Chinese acupuncture.
Her books, clinics and workshops have been making waves in the western world where she has trained over 25,000 doctors. For the first time, she is coming to India to train professionals over a five-day period.
‘‘An allergy is an abnormal, adverse physical reaction of the body to certain substances known as allergens or antigens which may be harmless to most other individuals,’’ explain Mumbai acupuncturists Meher Davis and Firoza Moos who have trained with Dr Nambudripad in Los Angeles.

‘‘An allergy doesn’t just mean sneezing and hives,’’ they add.
Allergens could be inhalants (eg dust, pollen etc), ingestants (food, medicines etc), injectants (insect bites, injections etc), infectants (virus, bacteria etc), contactants (eg soaps, shampoos etc), moulds and fungi (yeast, fungus) and physical agents (eg heat, cold and even people). What happens is that the immune system identifies these harmless substances as dangerous invaders to the body’s well-being and activates antibodies to defend the body. In Chinese medication, this reaction disrupts the energy flow to the meridians or energy pathways. This blocked flow is the first step in a chain of events that can develop into an allergic reaction resulting in anything from sinusitis to depression. NAET seeks to identify the allergen and then desensitise the body, strengthening the immune system and helping the body resume its homeostasis.
I am not only reading Dr Nambudripad’s books (Say Good-Bye to Illness, Say Good-Bye to Autism, Living Pain-free), but I also put myself through an allergy test. I still have some sessions to go before the treatment is complete, but the reason I begin to have hope is that Moos and Davis identified yeast and fermented foods as one of my major allergens. In retrospect I see that every time I ate idli, sprouts or cheese, I got an upset stomach.
