Chahal gets bail in assets case

After his arrest almost three months ago, BIS Chahal, the high-profile media adviser to former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, was released from the Patiala Central Jail on Thursday.

Chahal got bail from a local court in the disproportionate assets case registered against him by the Vigilance Bureau. He has already been bailed out in other cases registered against him so far by the Punjab Police.

Pleading his bail plea before the Additional District and Session Judge Bhupinder Singh, Chahal8217;s counsels said he should be granted bail since he has been behind bars for long and there were no recoveries to be made from him.

The judge granted Chahal bail on a personal bond of Rs 5 lakh, along with a surety of the like amount. After his release from jail, Chahal drove off with one of his counsel to Chandigarh and is lodged at an undisclosed place. He did not meet anyone after his release.

The mobile phones of Chahal8217;s counsels and associates accompanying him were also put off, while his family in Glasgow expressed happiness over his release. His family has been living abroad ever since the assembly polls in the state.

Chahal was booked by the Ludhiana police in an attempt to murder case, while two more cases were registered against him for fraud and cheating, besides a Vigilance case for possessing disproportionate assets.
