
BJP leader L K Advani today slammed the UPA government and blamed it for farmers8217; suicides. Addressing a public meeting at Sarasbaug here as part of the Bharat Suraksha Yatra, he said the Centre, by importing onions, had made the farmers8217; lives miserable and they were left with no option but to commit suicide.
He criticised the Centre for 8216;minorityism8217; and said the decisions taken by it during the last two years were all directed towards it. Whether it was setting up the Banerjee Committee to probe the Godhra carnage, amending Foreigner8217;s Act in Assam, reservation in educational institutions in AP or Aligarh Muslim University, Advani said they were all done with an eye on the votebank.
8216;8216;The Prime Minister is supposed to give direction to the government. But in case of the current government, Congress president Sonia Gandhi is operating the steering wheel,8217;8217; he said. He attacked the UPA government8217;s policy on terrorism, increasing infiltration by Bangladeshi nationals.
Meanwhile, Rajnath Singh in Chhattisgarh said, 8216;8216;We are dismayed that the UPA government has taken such a casual attitude to the Maoist threat.8221;
He alleged that the Congress government in Andhra Pradesh had tried to appease the extremists and gave them an opportunity to regroup and rearm themselves. Warning that the Centre8217;s 8216;8216;inaction8217;8217; would prove costly, he suggested a five-point strategy to deal with the problem.
