AHMEDABAD, July 21: A central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Gandhinagar team trapped a superintendent of Central Excise (preventive) collectorate at Surat accepting illegal gratification of Rs 25,000 from a Sachin-based process house on Tuesday. Later searches were carried out at the residence of the accused and officials recovered Rs 5 lakh and some incriminating documents, informed reliable sources.The superintendent, J J Bhavsar had recently raided the process house with the Central Excise team and demanded Rs 1 lakh from the owners to reduce the duty amount.The process house had pleaded helplessness in paying the money at once and had fixed installments for payment. In the meantime, they had complained to the CBI in this regard. A CBI team kept a watch on the superintendent and laid a trap with the help of the process house assistant at a place in Surat.The superintendent, when contacted the process house assistant and was receiving Rs 25,000 of the first installment, the sleuths caught him red-handed. Sources said that the investigating team was trying to get more information about extortion from other similar units by the superintendent.Sources said that searches were made in the connection and officers are interrogating the undertrial.
