NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 17: At 11 a.m. this morning, Bibi Jagir Kaur walked into the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office. The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) chief said that she had nothing to hide and that the law would takes its course before she went to the CBI’s special investigation cell on Dalhousie Road.
Prime accused in her daughter Harpreet Kaur’s death, Kaur was granted interim bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday and was directed to appear before the CBI in New Delhi by 11 a.m. today. Complying with the order, Kaur made it in time to the CBI headquarters this morning.
Three hours later, a tight-lipped Kaur walked passed all the security manning the interrogation room, sat in her white ambassador, rolled up the tinted panes and drove away. Refusing to comment on the interrogation, Kaur left in a hurry, her supporters in tow.
Her lawyers followed, stopping for just a minute to say that they were going to cooperate with the investigating authorities. “We are a part of the investigations,” clarified one of her lawyers. “As and when the agency needs us, we will come again.”
According to CBI officials, Kaur’s interrogation this morning is incomplete and she will be called in again. Officials added that the issue of challenging the anticipatory bail granted to her by the Punjab and Haryana High Court was being reviewed by legal experts.
“The decision to arrest her solely depends on the investigating officer,” a CBI spokesperson said. “The investigations are still on and the investigating officials will decide at what stage she should be arrested. In the meanwhile, we are taking a legal opinion on the anticipatory bail issue.”
In a related development, Kamaljit Singh, who says he is Harpreet Kaur’s husband, said he will challenge the anticipatory bail granted to Kaur. “We are questioning the basis on which the High Court granted Bibi Jagir Kaur a confirmed anticipatory bail,” clarified Indu Malhotra, Kamaljit’s counsel. “The high court could at best have granted a conditional anticipatory bail to facilitate her appearance before the CBI for interrogation.”
On November 13, the CBI had changed the charge against Jagir Kaur from section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) to section 302 of the IPC (murder) after questioning nearly 20 people including the six arrested.
