
The Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday booked Inspector General of Police-cum-Director Vigilance, Punjab Sumedh Singh Saini and various other police officers of Chandigarh Police on charges of kidnapping in order to murder and fabricating false evidence.
The FIR was registered by the CBI, during an ongoing inquiry ordered by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, for tracing the whereabouts of a few accused and their kin in Saini blast case. The CBI has been asked by the court to submit a chargesheet in the case within three months.
Those booked in the case are Saini, former DSP Baldev Singh Saini who retired as SP from Punjab police, Inspector Jagir Singh SHO, Industrial Area police station, Chandigarh, Inspector Harsahai Sharma SHO, Police Station-3, Chandigarh and other police officers, whose names the CBI is yet to ascertain. Both Harsahai Sharma and Jagir Singh were Sub-Inspectors at that time.
While he was Chandigarh SSP, Saini was attacked in a bomb blast on August 29, 1991. During investigation, the name of Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar presently in custody figured. In order to reach him, the police picked up a few suspects including Balwant Singh Multani, a Junior Engineer, from his rented accommodation in Mohali, Navneet Singh, Manjit Singh alias Doctor and Devinder8217;s father Balwant Singh Bhullar.
