The Silchar police arrested two members of an inter-state carjacker gang who were involved in killing at least five drivers before fleeing with their vehicles. The husband-wife duo would be brought to Shillong on Tuesday to carry out further investigations.

The couple was identified as Raju Barman and Remita Basuamatry. According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police City Claudia Lyngwa, Raju and Remita are residents of a remote village along the Assam- Bhutan border.

8220;We had received a tip off from the Meghalaya Police after they carjacked a tourist taxi from Guwahati and tried to kill the driver in July. The driver managed to escape after he was thrown into a gorge between Shillong and Pynursla. He reported the matter to the Meghalaya Police and soon we picked them up,8221; said a police official.

8220;The gang has four members, including three men.

While two managed to escape, the police nabbed the duo. The gang is wanted by the Guwahati police as they are suspected to have murdered five drivers after stealing their cars,8221; said Lyngwa.

Lyngwa said Raju and Remita claimed to be husband and wife when they checked into hotels. She revealed that the gang had come to Shillong a couple of times and had stayed in two hotels.

8220;There have been several cases in the past where the drivers and vehicles disappeared mysteriously from Shillong. The drivers were later found murdered. We feel that they could have a hand in these incidents,8221; Lyngwa added.
