Nobody is fully qualified until he/she knows computers. However, most people assume that you should learn computers only if you want to become a software professional. While your profession may not be directly related to computes, just knowing how to use them would help you perform better. Computers play an important role in medicine, engineering, finance, management, fashion design and advertising.

Medicine: Over the last couple of decades, computers have been ushering in revolutionary techniques of diagnosis and treatment in medical science. Simple blood tests to complicated brain scans have all become more accurate and fool proof, thanks to computers.

Engineering: Engineering drawing in various shapes, designs and combinations have become an easy job because of computers.

Finance: Most companies are rapidly switching to computerised accounting systems. Long and time-consuming calculations can now be solved at the press of a button.

Management: The personal computer has revolutionised management functions. A good manager should be able to increase productivity without stretching the most scarce resource 8211; time. Computers reduce paperwork, speed up communication and improve te quality of work. You could enter, store and access whatever information you need at the press of a button.

Careers in Computers: Careers in computers include consultancy, database management, software exports, hardware specialisation, software training and marketing.

Software Development: Software is what controls the working of a computer. It could be application or systems-based. While an application software is used in businesses to handle various kinds of business-related transactions like the ones in accounting or railway reservations, the system software is used to develop the application software itself. The application software development requires the skills of Programmers, System Analysts and Software Engineers.

Programmers: Normally work under the guidelines provided by the System Analyst, and their job is mainly to do the real programming or coding using a computer based language like C, Visual BASIC and others.

System Analyst: Is a person responsible for the complete analysis of an existing system.

Software Engineers: Are responsible for the whole system, starting from the time of feasibility study of the project, to Project Costing, the cost-benefit analysis, the development, the implementation, and finally training of the staff on new procedures.

Database Administration: Data consolidation has become a vital component of every business. The companies today rely completely on computers for management of the huge databases that exist in the business, giving rise to a full fledged department called Electronic Data Processing Department EDP.

Software Training: Computers are being taught right in school. In addition to this, quite a few number of Computer Education Centres, in the private sector have been set up for specialised/advanced higher-end technical training, thus proving a very good career opportunity to those having good computer knowledge and a flair for teaching.

Marketing: The Software/ Computer Marketing is a challenging and very well paid profession. The people in marketing profession have to possess an in-depth technical knowledge of the latest software/ hardware products being developed and marketed.
