MUMBAI, Sept 29: Share prices suffered a setback on the Bombay Stock Exchange BSE on bull unloading coupled with selling pressure by the financial institutions. The volume of business was brisk but the undertone at close remained subdued.

The BSE Sensitive Index slumped from the day8217;s high of 3235.03 to 3125.47 before closing at 3146.83 with a sizeable loss of 60.09 points over the previous close of 3206.92. The BSE-100 Index lost 25.61 points to 1396.84 from the previous level of 1422.45.

Brokers said the sentiment turned weak on reports of a decline in the net asset value NAV of UTI8217;s US-64 and downtrend in the world markets. This forced bull operators to unload in prime counters. The bull liquidation at heavy-weighted counters was in view of the end of the settlement on the NSE.

Shares of FIs like ICICI, IDBI and IFCI were hit badly while software shares recovered partially towards the close after losing moderately during the course of trading earlier.

FIs, led by the UTI, pressed sizeablesales in Zee Telefilms, ITC, Satyam Computer and others. Grasim remained firm following the merger of Indian Rayon8217;s cement business.

The volume of business was sharply up by Rs 226.73 crore to Rs 1710.15 crore with Satyam clocking the highest turnover of Rs 430.53 crore. ITC lost Rs 7.75 at Rs 694.50, Zee Rs 34.50 at Rs 689.50, Pentafour Rs 14.75 at Rs 723.25, Reliance Rs 4.40 at Rs 121.30, SBI Rs 4 at Rs 203.60 and Tata Steel Rs 4.40 at Rs 93.25. ACC, Bajaj Auto, Colgate, Glaxo, HPCL, Castrol, Indian Rayon and Hindalco also suffered setback.

On the NSE, pivotals fell further sharply on increased selling pressure as the Nifty declined by 19.50 points. The Samp;P CNX Nifty opened at 928.30 and closed at 908.40, showing a loss of 19.50 from the previous close of 927.90. The total turnover was at Rs 1,832.79 crores from 679.05 lakh shares and in 2,22,281 trades. Debentures traded value was Rs 100.87 lakhs.

The five most prominent scrips of the day were Satyam Computers with a turnover of Rs 439.10 crores,ITC Rs 238.55 crores, Zee Tele Rs 188.13 crores, Pentafour Soft Rs 161.45 crores and Reliance Rs 106.23 crores.
