8226; It8217;s time the BJP severes its relationship with the RSS. Being a political party in the 21st century, the BJP8217;s policies must have a global orientation as well. The party must make decisions while being sensitive to reactions beyond India8217;s political boundaries. We are now living in a global village. But the RSS has no responsibility other than repeating its founder8217;s idea. It makes no effort to reinvent and recast it as time goes on.

On his return

8226; L.K. Advani should not have withdrawn his resignation as BJP chief under any circumstances or pressure. This substantiated that it was all a drama.

Law must rule

8226; By trying to evade the authorities in the poaching tangle, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi is only tarnishing his reputation of being a responsible and respected citizen. If he is really guilty of the serious offence of killing an animal belonging to an endangered species, he should have the courage to face the legal consequences.

India vs China

8226; Thomas Friedman is too pessimistic about China in 8216;Beijing or Bangalore? The race hots up8217; IE, June 10. He forgets that Taiwan, Singapore, Hongkong and South Korea all tasted economic success under military dictatorship or one man rule. Also, China had learnt a bitter lesson from the former USSR, when Gorbachev brought political reforms ahead of economic reforms, reducing Russia to a toothless regional power without political or economic clout.
Indian politicians do not want a genuine meritocracy. They follow the path of least resistance, that is, the reservation route. This recipe is disaster for India.

8226; India might become a superpower but it doesn8217;t look like it is happening in the near future. Look at the 500 odd million people who are still below poverty line. What would you do with them? Probably some fine day the infrastructure might be put in place but what would you do with the people, overwhelmingly poor and uneducated?

Defend it

8226; C. Raja Mohan writes in the context of the prime minister8217;s visit to Siachen IE, June 10 8220;The purpose and context of the Indian Army8217;s presence 8212; costly in financial, strategic and military terms 8212; have to be reconsidered8221;. Let me, as an ordinary Indian, state that every piece of India is worth defending. Pakistan has to accept the ground reality. Land won by the valour of our jawans should not be bartered away.

The real calculus

8226; Has Advani changed? Has he become more tolerant to Muslims? I think these are useless questions to ask for any politician of today8217;s era. There are no principles/ethics. It is only electoral politics.
