Mumbai, October 24 : The organisers of the sixth Bournvita Inter-Schools Chess Tournament, the Kalina Recreation and Sports Club and the Bombay Chess Association, are expecting upwards of 1,100 entries for the October 30-November 9 event to be held at the Prabodhankar Thackeray Krida Sankul, Shahaji Raje Road, Vile Parle (E). The venue is situated on the road from Parle Biscuit factory to Andheri Station (E).
“We have received 1,100 entries last year and expect more this year. This is the biggest chess tournament for children in India and probably the biggest in the world which we have to authenticate in order to gain a mention in the record books,” Organising Committee spokesman Vinay Shetty told a press conference on Monday.
The tournament is restricted to school students (upto Standard X) from Mumbai and its neighbouring districts, Thane and Raigad, and will have four age groups each for boys and girls.
The event sponsors will take care of the entry fee of the best boy and girl in each category (under 8, 10, 12 and open) in the age-group Nationals, while the London School of Economics has pitched in with an offer to award Rs. 3,500 each to the best boy and girl in each category, it was announced.The tournament will be played on a 11-round Swiss League basis. Entries will be accepted till October 27. Entry forms have been sent to all schools.
