NEW DELHI, AUGUST 2: While different police agencies fought to pass on the responsibility, the bodies of a mother and child lay near the railway tracks for eight hours as trains passed by.

Ashwini (28) and her one-year-old daughter Lalita were reportedly hit by a shuttle train near the Chanakyapuri railway station at around 10.15 am on Wednesday. The delay in picking up their bodies was because the police stations of Chankapuri and R.K. Puram, the Railway Police and Police Control Room tried to pass the responsibility to one another.

The mother and daughter, like other residents of Sanjay Camp, had gone to bathe in a drain located a few metres from the railway track.

The woman was pregnant and was married only a few years ago and her death called for an SDM inquest. According to forensic experts, in such cases, spot inspection is vital for clues.

Collecting clues was the last thing on the mind of the policemen as they were busy fighting.

The residents of Sanjay Camp called the PCR several times from 11.15 onwards. According to Subhash Yadav, a resident, the PCR was again informed at around 12.30. Finally at 1.15, policemen from Chanakyapuri police station came to her house at Sanjay camp.

“The sub-inspector said that the bodies are not in Chanakyapuri police station’s jurisdiction. And that the railway police should be informed,” said J.P. Shukla, another Sanjay Camp resident.

A railway police team led by an SI reached the spot at 2.30pm. But they claimed that the place where the bodies were lying did not fall in their jurisdiction. They said R.K. Puram police station should be informed. An R.K. Puram police team led by the SHO reached the spot and discovered that it was the railway police’s responsibility.

Finally, a railway police team reached the station and took the bodies away. The bodies will be cremated after the SDM inquest and post-mortem.

“The bodies should have been taken away earlier. If it is my SHO’s responsibility, it will be fixed. I can’t say about the railway police,” said DCP South-West, Taj Hassan.
