The Indian administration’s silence on the ban on blogs may have stirred extreme reactions from online communities, but officials in the India’s consular office in New York have reassured concerned local bloggers that ‘‘normalcy in respect of blogs will soon be restored.’’
A.R. Ghanashyam, India’s Deputy Consul General at New York, had taken up the matter of blogs being blocked in India with officials concerned in the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). After receiving inputs from DoT on the issue, Ghanashyam has issued a clarification.
‘‘A two-page write up containing extremely derogatory references to Islam and the Prophet, which had the potential to inflame religious sensitivities in India and create serious law and order problems in the country, appeared in a blog facilitated by well known search engines,’’ the note says. ‘‘The matter was immediately taken note of by our Computer Emergency Response Team and DoT was informed of it. DoT took up the matter forthwith with the search engines and instructions were also issued to all Internet providers to block the two impertinent pages,’’ it adds. However, an error, similar to the one that led to all Yahoo e-groups being blocked a few years ago, may have caused the disconnect between the intent and the execution. The note says, ‘‘Because of a technological error, the Internet providers went beyond what was expected of them which in turn resulted in the unfortunate blocking of all blogs.’’ ‘‘DoT has now clarified the issue and the error is being rectified and normalcy in respect of blogs will soon be restored,’’ the note concludes.
