PANAJI, JUNE 23: The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party BJP in Goa has decided to back any breakaway faction of the ruling Congress in order to topple the two-week-old Government in the State.

Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar of the BJP told mediapersons though his party was not in favour of bringing down the Government, any breakaway faction would be supported in order to prevent fresh elections in the State.

The Luizinho Faleiro-led Ministry has a strength of 21 legislators in the 40-member House. However, several members of the Legislative Assembly, particularly former ministers, have been airing their differences with the Chief Minister for not being given a berth. Former member of Parliament and Health Minister Fransisco Sardinha is also reported to have thrown in his lot with the group.

Sardinha, who staked his claim for the top job soon after the elections, has spoken to the media to protest his downgrading. All India Congress Committee general secretary Madhavrao Scindia had told mediapersons earlier this month that one or two more additions to the Cabinet would be made shortly. At present, a six-member Cabinet reports to Faleiro.

The leader of the Opposition, however, felt the new Government should be allowed to function for at least 100 days. He, however, questioned the credentials of those close to the Chief Minister. Faleiro also drew criticism from the Opposition leader for bringing the autonomous Economic Development Corporation under the Finance Ministry.
