Charging the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) with a political agenda, the BJP today said it was out to defame the states ruled by the party.

BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said the NCM is part of a systematic campaign underway to give a bad name to BJP governments. ‘‘Its actions are biased and politically-motivated,’’ he said. Decrying its total focus on BJP states, Prasad asked sarcastically: ‘‘Don’t they have any complaint from other states?’’

The BJP spokesman saw a pattern in the functioning of the NCM. NCM members, according to him, visited a certain place in a BJP-ruled state and even before they submitted their report one or two members would speak to the media against the government. ‘‘They are a little too eager to give their decisions ex parte,’’ he said. ‘‘What else can we expect given the Congress background of NCM members like Harcharan Singh Josh?,’’ he asked.

Prasad felt the whole anti-BJP drive was linked to the laws enacted by BJP governments to check conversions. He claimed that ‘‘circumstancial evidence’’ showed that Christian missionaries were using education and healthcare as a ploy to convert people.

When pointed out that BJP leaders like Dilip Singh Judeo were also engaged in conversions, Prasad argued ‘‘our ghar-vapsi programme is voluntary and held in full public view.’’
