Silver reacts sharply
MUMBAI:
Silver prices reacted sharply in a weak bullion market here Saturday. The sharp erosion in silver prices was mainly attributed to heavy arrivals of raw silver as against poor industrial demand.

Silver ready .999 fineness slumped by Rs 130 to Rs 8025 from Rs 8155. Raw silver .916 fineness dropped by Rs 135 to Rs 7900 from Rs 8035 and tenderable silver declined to Rs 8030 from Rs 8160 previously. From last Wednesday, silver prices have dipped by Rs 195 and Rs 200 per kg respectively due to the price crashing in international markets, Bombay Bullion Merchants Association president M L Damani said. Standard gold eased to Rs 4195 from Rs 4200. 22-carat gold was nominally quoted lower at Rs 3880 from Rs 3885. Ten-tola gold bar .999 purity softened to Rs 49,300 from Rs 49,350 previously.

Vashisti Detergents has achieved a gross turnover of Rs 53.62 crore for the first quarter of 1998-99, an increase of 45 per cent over the corresponding period oflast year. The company has reported a gross profit of Rs 2.25 crore against Rs 2.24 crore for the first half of the previous year.This also compares favourably with the previous financial year8217;s gross profit of Rs 5.78 crore. The net profit has shown a marked increase to Rs 1.26 crore for the period compared to Rs 1.82 crore for the full year 1997-98.

Manugraph Industries has recorded an increase in the total sales and other income of Rs 101.55 crore during 1997-98 compared to Rs 79.67 crore of the corresponding period in the last year despite the labour strike at their factories at Kolhapur. The export sales increased by 20 per cent from Rs 32.49 crore to Rs 39.30 crore. The company has earned a profit after tax of Rs 3.04 crore against Rs 1.93 crore.
