The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ahmedabad (Rural), on Thursday issued non-bailable warrants against two doctors in the Bilkis case after they failed to appear before the court.
The warrants were issued against Dr Arun Kumar Prasad and his wife, Sangita Prasad — who conducted the post-mortem of the victims and examined Bilkis after the alleged incident during the post-Godhra riots on March 3, 2002 — for not being present in court despite the summons served on them on April 19.
Summons were served by the CJM’s court on six persons, including the two doctors and four policemen, against whom CBI had found proof of tampering with evidence and suppression of facts. They were asked to remain present in the court on Thursday. However, none of the six appeared before the court today.
Counsels for the four cops, including two ACPs, one PSI and a head constable, appeared and moved an application seeking more time for their appearance.
The court has granted them time tll April 30 to present themselves.
In Vadodara, two of the 21 accused in the Best Bakery case have been taken into judicial custody after the Supreme Court ordered reinvestigation and retrial of the case and shifted its hearing to Maharashtra on April 12, a senior police official said today. Efforts are on to trace the remaining 19 accused, city police chief S.K. Sinha said.
A Supreme Court bench had quashed the acquittal of 21 accused in the post-Godhra Gujarat riot case and allowed two petitions — one by key witness Zahira Habibullah Sheikh and the other by the Gujarat government — challenging the High Court order confirming the trial court verdict to acquit all the accused in the case.
