The long-awaited reply from the Samata Party to the Election Commission on the dissolution of its Bihar executive has finally arrived at the EC’s office.
‘‘The Bihar state executive committee of the Samata Party has not been dissolved,’’ said party general secretary and national spokesman Shambhu Srivastava, in response to the EC’s letter of February 25. ‘‘No notification in this regard has been issued by either the president or the general secretary of the party. The committee elected at the time of the last party elections continues to be in existence.’’
Samata Party has refuted the contention of its Bihar legislator P.K. Sinha before the EC that the state executive committee of the party had been dissolved and said his petition was ‘‘infructuous’’.
The EC had sought Srivastava’s comments on Bihar legislator P.K. Sinha’s representation on February 10 in which he had alleged that the state executive had been ‘‘arbitrarily, unconstitutionally and undemocratically’’ dissolved by MPs supporting Railway Minister Nitish Kumar.
Sinha was summarily removed from the post of state spokesman by state general secretary Satish Kumar on February 2, a few days before state unit chief Raghunath Jha stepped down as part of a compromise formula to avert a split in the party.
Both Sinha, a member of the party’s national executive and Jha are considered close to party president and Defence Minister George Fernandes.
