It was his modus operandi that gave him away. A 19-year-old farm labourer was arrested in Ahmedabad for allegedly robbing a jewellery store after breaking through its wall and fleeing with goods worth Rs 1.75 lakh, the police said on Saturday.
The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Ahmedabad City Police arrested Ashwin Khadiya, who had, in the early hours of January 8, allegedly broken into a jewellery shop in Sagar Apartment, after managing to bypass high-tech security and heavy shutters by employing an ‘innovative’ technique—digging through the shop’s rear brick wall.
“Through this narrow breach, Khadiya slipped inside and then vanished into the night with silver ornaments valued at Rs1.75 lakh, leaving behind a scene that baffled many…,” a statement by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ajit Rajian said.
Instead of relying solely on physical evidence, the investigation team reconstructed the thief’s psychology, theorising that someone capable of such a labour-intensive breach likely possessed a background in construction or manual labour and would seek refuge in familiar labour colonies.
The police team thus narrowed their focus to the settlements near Ramol canal and Jamfalwadi. “The investigation then worked digital footprints, synchronising feeds from hundreds of CCTV cameras across the Hatkeshwar-Ramol corridor, looking for subtle movement patterns—specifically individuals carrying heavy, concealed loads in the dead of night. By merging this technical surveillance with a network of human informants, the Crime Branch tracked the suspect’s ‘digital breadcrumbs’ with precision,” said the statement.
A trap was laid near the Shaktimata Temple at Jamfalwadi, and Khadiya was caught while allegedly trying to move the stolen goods. The police recovered all the stolen goods.
