Kolkata traffic advisory for Republic Day 2026: Several roads closed on Jan 24 & 26 – check alternate routes

Kolkata traffic advisory: Major roads will remain closed and traffic will be diverted for several hours on January 24 and January 26 in Kolkata in view of the Republic Day parade and its rehearsal. “All classes of vehicles and all kinds of traffic, including pedestrian traffic, within the city of Kolkata shall be regulated,” the Kolkata Police said in a statement.

For the full real-time final dress rehearsal on January 24, the following roads in the Kolkata Maidan and adjoining areas will be closed to vehicular traffic between 6.30 am and 12.00 noon:

  • Hospital Road
  • Lovers Lane
  • Queensway
  • Casuarina Avenue
  • Plassey Gate Road
  • Khidderpore Road
  • Red Road
  • Gosthapal Sarani
  • R.R. Avenue (southern flank) between Government Place East and Government Place West

No goods vehicles will be allowed to ply or remain on St. George’s Gate Road, Strand Road, and approach roads to the parade during the movement of military personnel and vehicles to and from the venue.

B.B.D. Bag–bound traffic will be diverted. “Those along Alipore Road and Belvedere Road via Zeerut Bridge and/or coming along D L Khan Road towards AJC Bose Road will be diverted along AJC Bose Road, St Georges Gate Road, Strand Road, Gosthapal Sarani / Kshudiram Bose Road, Govt Place (west) and onwards,” the notification from Kolkata police read.

Vehicles along Harish Mukherjee Road will be diverted via Cathedral Road, J.L. Nehru Road, and Guru Nanak Sarani.

Several roads will remain closed in view of the Republic Day parade on January 26, while parking restrictions will be in place for others.

  • Red Road will be closed to all vehicular movement from 10.00 pm on January 25, 2026, until the parade is over.
  • From 5.30 am to 1.00 pm or until the parade is over, movement of all types of goods vehicles will be restricted along A.J.C. Bose Road towards the south from its crossing with Lenin Sarani (Moulali crossing), St. George’s Gate Road, Strand Road up to Raja Woodmunt Street, along C.R. Avenue from G.C. Avenue towards the south, and along J.L. Nehru Road in both directions.
  • Guru Nanak Sarani (Mayo Road) will remain closed to all vehicular traffic, except cars with special parade stickers, from 5.30 am until the parade is over.

The following roads will be closed to vehicular traffic on 26.01.2026 from 05.30 hrs till the parade is over:

• Hospital Road
• Lovers Lane
• Casuarina Avenue
• Khidderpore Road from Ghora Pass to J & N Island, except bridge-bound vehicles and AJC ramp vehicles
• R.R. Avenue between Y Road tram track and Government Place West
• Gostha Pal Sarani (Kingsway)
• Queensway
• Plassey Gate Road
• Dufferin Road
• Outram Road
• Esplanade Ramp
• Government Place West (only for southbound vehicles)

Parking will be prohibited on the following roads from 05.30 hrs. till the parade is over:

• R.R. Avenue
• Government Place West between R.R. Avenue and Esplanade Row West
• Chowringhee Road
• J.L. Nehru Road
• Cathedral Road
• Strand Road and St. George’s Gate Road between Napier Road and Kingsway
• Queensway
• Outram Road

Parking will also be prohibited on the eastern side of Strand Road between Kingsway and Auckland Road, except for vehicles carrying participants for the parade.

The police have however allowed parking for personal vehicles at western side of Chowringhee Road between AJC Bose Road and Shakespeare Sarani.

Only the vehicles belonging to parade participants will be allowed entry through Queensway from the crossing of Queensway and Cathedral Road. Meanwhile, New Road will move in the opposite direction (south to north towards Dorina crossing) to facilitate the drain out of CBT vehicles.

The police noted that WBTC Buses will be available at their depot at Esplanade via R R Avenue. However, from 5.30 am to 1 pm on the parade day, the bus stand on the eastern side of Strand Road along the Band Stand at Eden Gardens will be shifted to the western side of Strand Road, opposite to the Band Stand.

“Vehicular traffic may also be diverted from any of the arterial roads and feeder roads by the traffic police on duty as and when considered necessary on the days,” Kolkata Police noted.
