A contorversy has erupted in Bihar with Governor V.C. Pande sacking two members of the Bihar State University Service Commission (BSUSC) over the list of candidates chosen for lecturership.

The two members — acting chairman of the Commission Sardeo Nandan Singh and Durga Prasad — who were sacked for ‘‘insubordination and inefficiency’’, said they would move court. They said the Commission being an autonomous body, the decision should have been taken by the council of ministers Singh’s term as acting chairman was to expire on January 2, 2004, while Prasad was to have retired today.

Meanwhile, Pande has also sought clarification from another BSUSC member H.B.P. Sinha on the latter’s reply on the Commission’s functioning.

The wrangle first started when the Commission published its list of candidates for the post of lecturership in various universities after a gap of six years.

The disagreement, according to Singh, arose over their criteria of selecting students. They were giving 40:60 weightage to academic score and interview while the universities had wanted a 75: 25 ratio.

On December 5, show cause notices were served to all three members of the Commission asking why their services should not be terminated for violating the directives of the Chancellor. The members replied but two were sacked. Law Minister Shakeel Ahmed Khan said the government would look into the matter.
