
CHANDIGARH, April 27: Accused Gurmeet Singh was absent from the office on August 31, 1995, the day, the then chief minister of Punjab, Beant Singh was assassinated, deposed witness Parvinder Prashar during the trial, here today.
Prashar, engineer-cum-supervisor in BPL India Limited8217;s appliance division, according to the prosecution, was engaged in assigning duties to technicians and engineers working under him, including Gurmeet Singh.
Deposing before UT District and Sessions Judge Amar Dutt, in the makeshift court room at Model Jail, Burail, he stated that Gurmeet was also on leave on September 4, 1995. He last attended office, the next day, he added.
Identifying the accused in the court, the witness testified that Gurmeet had worked under him in August and September, 1995. His leave record and attendance register too was submitted before the court.
The case, meanwhile, had to be adjourned prematurely, following one of the defence counsel8217;s disagreement with the Sessions Judge.
The case will now come up for further arguments tomorrow.
