A new machine for autorickshaws is set to serve a three-fold purpose: raise fuel efficiency by 30 per cent, reduce pollution levels and increase the driver8217;s income. Called the direct injection8221; retrofit, the machine will replace the carburettor.

Such machines will be fitted into city autos on an experimental basis, the air quality management AQM cell of the Pune Municipal Corporation PMC announced on Friday. The US Environmental Protection Agency has funded the exercise; its members Dennis Leaf and Ted McDonald were in the city to interact with a select group of auto drivers. A company called Envirofit has developed the retrofit.

8220;The direct injection is fitted in place of the carburettor. In the carburettor, fuel and air come from separate chambers and get mixed. With this direct injection, the two get mixed as required, which prevents wastage of fuel. But to come to a concrete conclusion, we will carry out tests for three months at least,8221; said Dr Ajay Ojha, AQM manager.

Three city autorickshaws have run with such machines for three months. One of hem, Yashwant Salunkhe, said, 8220;The retrofit installed in my vehicle has saved about Rs 150 daily.8221; However, they were skeptical about its mass-use if the cost of the retrofit is not kept low.

Baba Shinde, a member of Regional Transport Authority RTA, said, 8220;This retrofit can prove a better option than an LPG kit. It is safer and less polluting.8221;

8220;We embarked upon this activity about nine months back. If the cost of the machinery is kept low, then it could spread at a mass level,8221; National Environmental Engineering Research Institute officer Rakesh Kumar said.
