AHMEDABAD, Nov 2: Assistant General Manager of Reserve Bank of India, Ashram Road, has claimed that some unidentified person made an aborted attempt to encash a cheque of Rs 20 lakh.

In a complaint at Naranpura Police station, Assistant General Manager Pradeep J Mahapatra has claimed that about 1 pm on October 28, a man presented a cheque of Rs 20 lakh at the counter for encashment. The officer at the counter gave him a token.

The cheque was then sent to Mahapatra for verification. Naranpura Police said the cheque was of Mehsana Co-operative Bank on C G Road.

After verifying the signatures, Mahapatra suspected foul play and immediately called for the manager of Mehsana Co-operative Bank. After verification, the RBI AGM found the seal of the bank and signatures to be fake.

Meanwhile, sensing trouble, the man made good his escape without waiting to collect the amount.

In the past few days, incidents of financial fraud have been on the rise in the city. The most glaring being the fraud at State Bank of India, main branch, where bogus drafts were presented for encashing.
