
The firing at the office of human rights activist Dr Ansar Burney in Karachi was condemned by several activists including director Mahesh Bhatt.
Ansar Burney8217;s residence was attacked by unidentified gunmen on Friday, November 7.
The gunmen, reportedly, came in cars and fired many rounds at the ground floor of the office of the Ansar Burney Trust at Arambagh road in Pakistan8217;s port city of Karachi.
Burney was present in the office at the time of firing. However he escaped unhurt.
The incident occurred less than a fortnight after the government withdrew his police security. Five guards posted at his home in Karachi and two armed bodyguards assigned to him were withdrawn on the eve of his visit to India to accept the third Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for human rights and social justice. The award was presented to Burney on October 26.
State minorities commission vice-chairperson Dr Abraham Mathai said that Burney has received many death threats for his work, including his campaign to save Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh.
