CALCUTTA, May 6: Assam qualified for the quarter-finals of the National women8217;s Football Championships after holding Maharashtra to a goalless draw in Group C today.
Assam, who were best placed to qualify from the group after their 2-0 first leg victory over the same opponents yesterday, played for a draw today. Maharashtra needed a victory margin of at least 3-0 today, but never really showed any urgency to get it.
Assam now join defending champions Bengal, last year8217;s semi-finalists Kerala and Orissa in Group Q of the quarter-final league which starts from tomorrow.
The other Group have Manipur, the runners-up last time, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Goa. All the teams will play their first matches of the quarter-final stage tomorrow as four games are scheduled at the Sports Authority of India ground.
Assam put on their defensive garb right from the beginning and made it clear that they would prefer settling for a draw. Keeping possession of the ball as long as possible, the North-Eastern team rarelyallowed the Maharashtra strikers to enter the box. The game was played mainly in the midfield and Assam girls held sway even in that region. Assam will now meet defending champions Bengal in their first quarter-final league match.
