Bangalore, Nov 14: S Aurav Chakraborty and Susmita Ray were crowned the boys and girls champions as West Bengal made a clean sweep of the titles in the 62nd junior National and inter-state table tennis championships at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium on Tuesday.
The left-handed seventh-seed Saurav was in fine touch as he brushed past his compatriot Tanmoy Dutta in straight games 21-16, 21-10, 21-15. Sushmita, the girls’ top-seed overcame second seed Mousami Paul 21-18, 15-21, 22-20, 24-22.
Ninth-seed Tanmoy, who survived a five-setter against Eric Fernandez in the semis, raced to a 10-5 lead in the third game. But Saurav got back his rhythm and equalled the scores at 12-12 and then there was no looking back as he finished off the game in a hurry.
The girls final was more about who made lesser number of errors. Mousami made two errors towards the end of the game and conceded it 21-18. She came up with some forehand smashes in the second game and kept Susmita on the run. She won the game 21-15.
Mousami made greater number of errors in the next two games as she tried to execute her big forehand a bit too much. She hit a shot wide at 20-19 for Susmita to tie the third game 20-20. The No. 1 seed held her nerves to win it 22-20.
In the fourth game too Mousami faltered at crucial points to lose it 24-22. She had done well to come back from a 5-10 deficit, but the consistency of Susmita saw her through in the end. Susmita had a tough semifinal in which she beat Nandita Saha, number three here, 21-15, 18-21, 21-18, 21-19.
