HISAR, May 17: An overwhelming response to the Recruitment Rally8217; of the Army held at the Cantonment here today has given clear signals that the new scheme has been appreciated by prospective candidates and their kin.

The Army has dispensed with the old system of inviting applications and issuing call letters. As a result, this scheme has resulted in the elimination of middlemen in the recruitment process. 8220;This has been done to bring about transparency in recruitment. The candidate knows where he faltered,8221; claimed Brigadier P. S. Sandhu. DDG Recruitment. He said the drive was aimed at bringing an awareness and to build confidence among the candidates and their relatives in the recruitment process.

When the ENS correspondent arrived at the recruitment site, he found hundreds of barefooted, sturdy and robust-looking youngmen from Western Haryana lined up in the blazing sun.

About 500 robust candidates appeared for recruitment today. In Sirsa district, too, screening of sons of ex-servicemen, serving soldiers and their widows was carried out today. Nearly 50 per cent candidates were rejected as they failed to furnish documents pertaining to their qualification.

8220;A candidate has to pass through four stages to be eligible for recruitment,8221; said Colonel S. K. Bali, Recruiting Officer. 8220;Firstly a candidate should produce his qualification certificate. If found eligible, he is given a chest number8221;. A stamp is put on the arm to avoid impersonation. In the physical fitness, a candidate is required to cover a distance of 1.60 km in the stipulated time. Later, he is supposed to clear a nine feet ditch and pull-up beams, the recruitment officer said.

Talking about the schedule, Bali said that recruitment was being done in Hisar and Ambala. He said screening for Hisar May 18-1 9 Fatehabad May 20, Jind May 21 and Kaithal May 22 would be held in Hisar. Screening of candidates from Bhiwani, Mahendergarh and Rewari districts will begin from May 24 and will continue till May 29.

He said recruiting teams have come from Rohtak and Charkhi Dadri. Two teams from the division had also come to assist and supervise the recruitment process, he added.

Asked about the number of vacancies, he said that a total number of vacancies for the quarter ending April-June 98 was as under Soldiers General Categories- 1353, soldier Clerk-10, soldier Technical-10 and soldier nursing assistants - 6.

Earlier, Brigadier Baljeet Singh, Deputy GoC, inaugurated the recruitment rally.
