The remark of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at NDC 8212; plans for minorities, Muslims in particular, have the first claim on resources 8212; evoked a sharp reaction from the BJP and the RSS here on Saturday.

8220;It is appalling, coming8230;from a prime minister,8221; BJP president Rajnath Singh said. 8220;India8217;s resources are not to be divided on communal lines. Every Indian, irrespective of his religion, has equal right over the country8217;s resources.8221;

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said, 8220;Such a statement is unbecoming of the Prime Minister.8221; 8220;It is very unfortunate,8221; he said, and added, 8220;Every citizen, irrespective of his caste and creed, should have an equal right over the resources of the country.8221;

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the remark was as 8220;dangerous8221; while Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh said economic backwardness should be the sole criterion for resource distribution.

RSS executive committee member Ram Madhav said the PM was speaking the language of Mohammad Ali Jinnah prior to Partition.
