When the two sides flew into Lahore after the first three games, the initiative was surprisingly with Pakistan. Surprising, because the hosts led 2-1 despite being rated as underdogs when the series commenced. India’s facile win in the fourth game not just brought things even: the ease with which the objective was achieved meant a a lot in restoration of confidence.

Wednesday, though, will be another day and another game. The Pakistanis are wounded, from the abject defeat and also from the slurs of some of their sentimental compatriots who think that the Indian victory was engineered through manipulation.

Inzamam, who scored two glorious hundreds in the two games that his side has lost, said today that it would be difficult to regain the momentum, but his team would not be faulted for want of trying.

While Pakistan definitely has enjoyed better balance, what has cost it dear is lack of discipline. The fire of Pakistani bowlers and the might of Indian batsmen was how it was dubbed in the hype before the series. But the bane of the Pakistani bowlers has been their lack of balance, and allowing all-out aggression to ruin their perspective and rhythm.

Though the Pakistani batting has done well overall, putting up decent totals batting first and chasing with guts and organisation (never considered its strong suit), it has more often been a couple of guys providing the runs.

More than the resources of the two teams, the mindset too would have a huge bearing on the outcome. On the evidence of results of the last year or so, the Indians have often choked at the last hurdle. That is a point noted by everyone, and the Indians would surely be keen to do away with the tag of chokers.

For their part, the Pakistanis need to be aware that in the last crunch game between the two sides, at Centurion a little over a year ago, it was India that had prevailed. So Inzamam and his charges would have to really dig deep and produce something out of the top drawer to clinch this last game. Regardless of which side takes the spoils of triumph and walks away with the silverware, it would not be a game for the fainthearted.
