When India finished seventh in the eight-nation Rabo Bank meet in August, Deepak Thakur didn8217;t think it would cost him a place in the Indian team. But the forward line8217;s poor showing in Amstelveen has returned to haunt the centre-forward. Thakur is not among the 46 probables.

8216;8216;I8217;m surprised,8217;8217; Thakur told The Indian Express from Chandigarh. 8216;8216;It8217;s not as though I8217;ve performed badly or I8217;m unfit. Still, the IHF hasn8217;t picked me,8217;8217; the 26-year-old added.

However, a source close to the IHF said coach Rajinder Singh Jr8217;s report must have gone against Thakur. 8216;8216;The coach has to give a detailed report of players8217; performance and behaviour after each tournament. Obviously, his Thakur8217;s exclusion is the outcome of the coach8217;s report,8217;8217; he said.

The coach had, in fact, blamed the senior players for India8217;s 0-1 defeat to Spain during the August tournament. Without taking names, the coach said that it was the experienced forwards who faltered and played notches below their potential.

Custodian Devesh Chauhan has also not found favour with the selectors. He was in Lucknow on a personal visit when this daily contacted him. He was as surprised: 8216;8216;I don8217;t know why I8217;m not in the team,8217;8217; was all he had to say.

Dhanraj Pillay isn8217;t there too, but he has refused to comment and it isn8217;t a surprise today.
