
NEW DELHI, June 8: The Air India National Hockey Academy AINHA has selected 10 players at the end of its annual selection trials. Players from Punjab and Uttar Pradesh impressed the panel of selectors most in the trials which were held at the National Stadium from June 4-6. Around 110 players from all over the country reported for the the three-day event.
The panel of selectors for the trials included Olympians Ashok Kumar, MK Kaushik, Ashok Diwan, the AINHA coach-in-charge AK Bansal and assistant manager sports, AINHA, Anup Chaudhury. Olympian Zafar Iqbal, who has been a member of the panel for the last five years was not in the Capital while the trials were on.
The players were selected on the basis of physical fitness test 8212; speed, agility, endurance 8212; and test of skills. The officials informed that every player was given at least four sessions of 80 minutes each to showcase his talent.
The strength of the academy has once again gone upto 24, as 14 players from the former batch are still undergoing training. Ten players from the academy had joined DLW, Varanasi earlier this year, including former India player Anwar Khan. The players in Varanasi are being coached by former India star Mohammed Shahid.
Coach AK Bansal expressed satisfaction with the trials saying that the response for the trails was much better than last year. 8220;We also had better talent on view. It was good to see players from Tamil Nadu and Mumbai, which were not represented in last year8217;s trials. The state-wise representation has been encouraging ,quot; he said.
