
Indian football continues to bring in good news. On this occasion, the Asian Football Confederation AFC has chosen the English coach of the Indian team, Stephen Constantine, as their 8216;Coach of the Month8217; for October. The recognition for Constantine comes for his brilliant handling of the Indian team at the Afro-Asian Games held at Hyderabad last month 8211; where they won the silver medal.
According to the AFC press release: 8216;8216;It proved that India has shown tremendous progress8217;8217;. At the AAG, India beat teams that are ranked much higher than them in the FIFA rankings 8211; Rwanda 3-1, Malaysia 2-0 and Zimbabwe 5-3.
The 41-year-old English coach, known to be a stickler for discipline on the field, continued his quest for earning accolades by winning an award every time he has coached a national team. Incidentally, this is his third award, the other two being the Prabal Gorkha Dakshin Baahu the Nepalese equivalent of the British OBE, which no other foreign coach in Nepal has been considered so far; and as the 8216;Manager of the Year8217; during his stint with the Cyprus team.
Constantine is the first foreigner to win the award as the coach of the Indian team and third from India after Sukhwinder Singh 2001 and Mohun Bagan coach Subrata Bhattacharya 2002.
Constantine, the youngest FIFA instructor at the moment, attributed the success to his players.
