With the US Presidential race taking a decidedly bitter turn over John Kerry8217;s Vietnam war record, US veterans in Hanoi are selling T-shirts supporting his run for the White House. 8216;8216;It8217;s an effort to bring some attention to Kerry8217;s war record to counter some of the allegations and some of the lies being made of his service in Vietnam,8217;8217; Chuck Searcy, who served in Vietnam, said.
The T-shirts being sold for 5 have 8216;8216;Americans Overseas for Kerry8217;8217; on the front and a picture of President George W. Bush8217;s face with a line crossed through it.
Searcy said Larry Holzman, a Hanoi-based American, arranged for 100 T-shirts to be printed, with the shipment arriving a few days ago. About 25 shirts have been sold, he added. 8216;8216;The first day they came in, we had a stack at a cafe and were examining them, and four Japanese tourists asked if they could buy them.8217;8217;
Kerry 8212; who suffered injuries in the Mekong Delta and received three Purple Hearts, a Bronze and Silver Star 8212; asked the Election Commission to force a group accused of collaborating with the Bush campaign to withdraw ads challenging his service in Vietnam.
Bush8217;s campaign advisers denied any involvement but have refused to denounce the ads. The White House criticised Kerry for 8216;8216;losing his cool8217;8217; over the accusations. Kerry8217;s supporters often contrast his military records with that of Bush, who spent the war serving in the Texas Air National Guard.
